Forty years after its premiere at the Heckscher Theater, Vy Higginsen and Ken Wydro hit gospel musical—inspired by the life of Higginson's sister, the 1960s soul singer Doris Troy—returns to the same venue (which is now a part of as El Museo del Barrio) for a celebratory Black History Month encore. The original production ran for more than 1,000 performances and spawned two sequels. Teenage actors Asa Sulton, Elise Silver and Faith Cochrane alternate as Doris in this version, which is directed Ahmaya Knoelle Higginson.
