New York City Opera revives Harold Prince's celebrated 1982 staging of the witty 1956 musical Candide, a mock-operatic romp through Voltaire's satirical picaresque, with a score by Leonard Bernstein (and a raft of different librettists) an a rewritten book by Hugh Wheeler. The alarmingly charming Jay Armstrong Johnson plays the titular naïf, joined by Linda Lavin as the Old Lady, Gregg Edelman as Pangloss, Meghan Picerno as Cunegonde and Broadway zanies Chip Zien and Brooks Ashmanskas in multiple small roles.
