The gleaming white Oculus in the Financial District may look like a pristine spaceship from the future, but it now houses a gym dedicated to decidedly gritty and old-fashioned sport: Boxing. However, this state-of-the-art studio is working on bringing the classic sport into the 21st century.
The 3,700-square-foot space is the studio’s third location in the US and its first on the East Coast. The facility combines boxing with conditioning and strength training and offers classes for small groups or one-on-one sessions.
Towards the entrance of the studio, a full-size boxing ring stands next to a turf area for strength training and core exercises. If you’ve never boxed before in your life, you’re in good hands. Introductory classes teach the basics of throwing a punch, jab and hook with a strong focus on footwork. In addition to the standard boxing workout, you’ll also find yourself taking advantage of speed bags, VersaClimbers and Woodway treadmills.
Locker rooms off the main training area offer spaces to store your belongings as well as single-stall bathrooms and showers for changing or rinsing off after an intense workout.
