Forget fluorescent lights and walls covered with sacred hearts and swallows. This East Village tattoo shop is a cozy, sophisticated parlor, complete with wall-mounted taxidermy, framed vintage prints, crystal chandeliers and copies of The New Yorker. Help yourself to a gratis spot of tea, cookies or an Americano from the espresso machine on the dark-wood counter while you discuss your idea for ink with one of the three resident artists, all of whom have fine-art backgrounds. Go to the boss, and you can be inked with owner Jes Ashby’s signature work, which features abstract shapes in vivid colors. Once you’ve settled on a design (consultations are free), take a seat in one of the studio’s three plush white chairs, where you’ll be tattooed with vegan ink (minimum of $150 per hour). On your way out, pick up some aftercare products, such as Ashby’s handmade vegan lotion ($10–$20).
