It’s not just angst-ridden teens rifling through the Stussy, Billabong and Obey threads at this upscale snow- and skateboard shop: Anyone in need of a mountain-ready parka or pair of in-line skates will appreciate Blades’ reliable gear. While the store stocks everything you need to cop the skater lifestyle—shoes by Vans and Supra, Nixon wallets and watches—it also sells all of the necessary paraphernalia for actually engaging in the sport, including Triple Eight helmets, knee-, wrist- and elbow-pads, and colorful decks, which the knowledgeable staff will assemble for free. Tourists come to the Upper West Side outpost to rent skates ($20 for 24 hours) for blading in nearby Central Park, but if it’s a ride to the mountains you need, both locations offer bus trips ($45–$175; sign up at bladesnyc.com) to several resorts, including breakfast and the option to add lift ticket, ski or board rentals, and even a lesson for novices.
