We scouted out the New York singles at dating websites Strange Angels and Match.com’s offline events. Ask them out over e-mail and go out on a date in NYC.

Strange Angels event at Public Assembly, September 23, 2012

Roughly 80 singles looking for a date in NYC flocked to Williamsburg on a Sunday evening for the inaugural live event by dating site Strange Angels (strangeangels.com), an online community that encourages friends, family or Good Samaritans to help members make connections. Minglers wore name tags color-coded to their relationship status—in addition to singles, a select number of matchmakers were invited to help organize and encourage conversation—and MCs Jonah Spear and Charlie Nox helped break the ice with games, skits and by reading aloud secrets that event-goers had placed in an anonymous confessional box.

Bex, 26, fashion stylist, Chelsea

Woman seeking men
“Running and biking are my preferred methods of transportation. A magical Saturday night involves ample twirling under myriad disco balls, gazing at pretty lights through 3-D glasses and canoodling in chinchillas at sunrise. I challenge you to a thrift-store fashion show walk-off.”

Elizabeth, 39; seamstress and milliner; Astoria, Queens

Woman seeking men
“I specialize in making hats for theaters and private clients. Recently, while consulting with a friend who is in the neoburlesque scene, I realized that pasties are just tiny hats, and thus, my company, Chapeau Du Sein, was born. Oh, and also, I make beer. Yup. Beer and pasties.”

Jolly, 28; hacker, photographer, speaker, nomad; Financial District

Man seeking women
“Every weekend, I find the most interesting place in the U.S. to be. In the past two months, I’ve jumped off bridges in Portland for the World Domination Summit, traded soul mates at Burning Man and learned how to be a caveman in Boston at the Ancestral Health Symposium. But last Friday, I flew to Chicago for a day to visit my family (and my teddy bear, Softy).”

Margot, 26, graphic artist, Chelsea

Woman seeking men
“In the last month, I returned from Burning Man, where I traded soul mates and danced on a shark car through the desert, participated in Fashion Week and celebrated Rosh Hashanah with friends. Yesterday, I enjoyed the outdoors by walking 150 blocks, exploring the city on a mission for all things pumpkin!”

Mattie, 24; social media coordinator and photographer; Long Island City, Queens

“I’m an outgoing and happy-go-lucky person. I love exploring the city and have so many interests that I’m happy to learn about yours. I’m a confident person—an optimist, really—that likes to meet new people and experience new things (that’s not code or sexual innuendo). I also love animals and I’m a carnivore.”

Paul, 32, business systems analyst, Lower East Side

n college, I was able to associate with many groups that would normally be opposed to each other. I have learned that it is vitally important for all people to become aware of the things that we all share. Under all the vitriol, we are more alike than we realize. With this, I hope that more women in New York will regard me as a potential match and be more open-minded towards me.”

Match.com’s the Stir, September 25, 2012

The scene here was markedly different to Strange Angels: A much larger group of singles took part in a livelier, but slightly less structured, fete. About 300 prematched singles packed a Union Square bar, where revelers played Ping-Pong, ate bar snacks and drank the night away. The singles, all Match.com members, were invited by the website based on factors such as age, neighborhood and line of work. The event was just one of many put on by Match.com in the area, ranging from similar large-scale happy hours and activities to intimate cooking classes, tequila tastings and dance lessons.

Jasmine, 31; digital resource manager; Jersey City, NJ

Woman seeking men
“One of the most important things you should know about me is that I’ve been traumatized by fences. Wooden, diamond-shaped, metal: They’ve all made appearances in my life for different reasons. Let me explain. At 8, I challenged one and failed. At 12, same deal: #epicfail. (Oh, and that time was particularly sad because it also involved the death of a McDonald’s cheeseburger. Sigh.) But here’s what’s great about failing: Last week, well, I scaled a park fence and won. So, you can take anything you want away from my story, but here’s what I think you should know about me: I love a challenge, I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and I, apparently, do not like to be fenced in.”
