If your ideal comfort food is grandma’s baked ziti or a massive meatball hero, Saluggi’s East on the Lower East Side is the place for you. This restaurant serves all kinds of Italian classics, starting with appetizers like fried calamari ($13), bruschetta ($9) and a traditional caprese salad ($13). Choose from entrees like a footlong overstuffed hero with pepperoni, salami, capicola, mozzarella, provolone and banana peppers ($13), a sausage roll with both hot and sweet sausage and roasted peppers ($13) and penne alla vodka ($12). The menu also includes brick-oven pizzas topped with salami, capicola and caramelized onions , mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and olives and even roasted Brussels sprouts and bacon (all $16 for a small, $22 for a large). You can also create your own pizza with any of the Saluggi’s 35 toppings ($15 for a small, $21 for a large, plus $2 per topping for small pies and $3 per topping for large pies).
