This place swings for the fences. Plaques mark DiMaggio’s and Mantle’s regular tables. The mostly male staff is outfitted properly with white coats and a gruff attitude. Appetizers focus on classics such as calamari and crab cakes, which are delicious, and small enough to remind you that you’ve come for the beef. So bring it on: Prime rib, filet mignon tips, beef Wellington with Madeira sauce—each cut has been dry-aged for four weeks. Add pillows of mashed potatoes and creamy spinach. Even basic desserts like chocolate cake and banana cream pie are outstanding. The check, however, may jolt you into realizing that the big hitters at the surrounding tables must be on expense accounts.
