The team behind Union Square pretty-people staple the Coffee Shop launches a Mexican spin-off next door, rigging the former four-car garage with a 25-foot mahogany bar, hanging surfboards and bright beachside posters. From an open kitchen, San Diego native Joel Oberlander (the Coffee Shop) sticks to his West Coast roots, serving tacos such as smoked pastrami with Thousand Island slaw and smoked brisket with pico de gallo, guacamole and salsa verde, alongside heftier burritos and flattened tortas. Drinks range from Mexican beers (Negro Modelo, Pacifico) to agave-based cocktails (paloma, margarita).
