Nothing makes an early morning bearable quite like a freshly roasted cup of coffee, and it doesn’t get much fresher than what’s percolating at this Carroll Gardens café, which roasts its coffee beans on premises. James Stahon (Rook Coffee) pours espresso drinks brewed with steamed milk in a Seattle-made Slayer Steam machine, along with lighter to medium roasts and even green coffees sourced from Gowanus’s Crop to Cup. Along with the glass-encased roaster, the multipurpose space features a 25-seat Nordic café, where guests can enjoy coffee and pastries in the a.m. and craft wine, beer and cocktails in the evenings, as well as a 75-seat comfort-food restaurant in back overseen by Clocktower alum Will Ono, who turns out all-day meals like smoked-pastrami bagels, a classic fry-up and a Fleishers cheeseburger with special sauce and pickles.
