When this slick Indian eatery opened nearly two years ago, it combined two dining trends: street food and upscale Indian cuisine. The menu evolved over time, but the restaurant still churns out tasty bites. Our favorite dish was a luscious, lacy dosa filled with saucy ground lamb. But little set apart the main courses (red snapper with a stewy tomato-and-onion sauce and chicken tikka) from the fare at humbler Indian spots. What Bombay Talkie does have is gloss: Sleek teakwood surfaces, a screen that plays Bollywood films and a fancy cocktail list. The Umrao Jaan is a distinctive mix of gin, lime juice and saffron syrup—certainly more upscale than street.
