In a true marriage of luxury and culinary creativity, Angelina Bakery's Upper East side location at 1649 Third Avenue by 93rd Street is currently serving an Italian-style donut (that is: a bombolone) dipped in 24-karat gold flakes and edible jewels.
Presented in a vintage Tiffany box, the visually striking treat costs $300. Is the gimmick necessary? Given the plethora of creative desserts all around town, the answer is no. Are we into it anyway? Obviously: we can't think of a better combination than jewelry and sweets.
If you're interested in this digestible bit of decadence, keep in mind that only the Upper East Side location of the bakery is currently selling the indulgence, which requires a two-day pre-order.
Believe it or not, patrons are actually willingly buying the donut.
"The clientele up here (the Upper East Side) is high-end, so the new bombolone seems perfect," the business' owner, Tony Park, said to Page Six.
Although we know nothing about the flavor of the treat (Angelina Bakery, if you read this, feel free to send us a sample!), there is something so quintessentially New York about the whole thing that almost guarantees it is worth the astronomical price tag. At the very least, grabbing and eating one will be the sort of "experience" that you can tell your fellow New Yorkers about—both in real life and on social media.
Given the fact that New York has been home to some truly outrageous (both in a good way and a bad way) gastronomic creations throughout the years—the most expensive fries in the world! Cheetos-dipped soft serve!—we're not too surprised about the diamond bombolone. To be honest, we're really hoping to try it.
