It’s about to go down.
The best sunset of the year is happening next week in NYC, making your first day back at work after Memorial Day weekend just a tiny bit less painful.
The impressive Manhattenhenge sunset happens when the sinking sun aligns perfectly with the street grid of NYC. The cosmos align twice each year, in May and July, for one night of magic plus a preceding almost-as-good display the night before. This year, the best view of the month will happen on Wednesday, May 30, at 8:12pm, with its runner-up on Tuesday, May 29, at 8:13pm.

If you want the perfect view of the sunset for the perfect Instagram photo, the best places to watch are on 14th, 34th, 42nd or 57th Streets. The wide streets offer the best view of the sunset, with the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building or the High Line providing a picturesque picture frame. And if you’re lucky, the sun will hopefully be bright enough to block out New Jersey in the background.
The last few years have had rainy, cloudy weather that sadly obscured the phenomenon, but we have faith that this year will be a night to remember. The current weather forecast says it will be partly cloudy with a high of 81 degrees on Tuesday and 71 degrees on Wednesday, so if that sticks, it could be the most impressive sunset NYC has seen in years.
