Puglia, the beautiful region in the south of Italy that forms the heel of the country's famous "boot," is finally getting the attention it deserves: Neos, an Italian airline company, announced plans to launch what it claims to be the first-ever nonstop flights between Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport, in the capital of Puglia, and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Set to debut on June 3 and operate through October 15, for now, the flights will only depart NYC on Tuesdays at 4pm and arrive in Bari around 8am the next morning. The Bari-New York route, on the other hand, will operate on Wednesdays only, for now.
"New York-Bari is much more than an air link," said Michele Emiliano, president of the Puglia region, in an official statement. "It is an embrace between Puglia and the world, a bridge that unites traditions, affection, heritage and opportunity, especially as many Americans are proud of their families' roots in Puglia."
Often overlooked for the likes of Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice, cities in Puglia offer outstanding food options (the region is known as the "breadbasket of Italy"), some of the best wines in the world and the sorts of historical sites that will have you re-think your current living situation. There's a reason why the New York Times included Puglia in its coveted 52 Places to Go in 2019 list.
The new route will be serviced by Boeing 787-9s, each featuring 255 seats.
