We always hope for a New Year’s Eve with tolerable temperatures and blue skies—the reality, at least for the past couple of years, has been freezing temperatures and buckets of rain.

That might be the case again this year. According to the latest forecast, there's a high probability of rain tomorrow evening and into early Wednesday morning.

The good news is that the rain won't last all night.

Here’s the breakdown: There’s a 20% chance of rain shortly after 4pm, and the evening is set to be relatively warm, with a high of 54 degrees. Then, there’s a 100% chance of rain before 1am that will possibly reach up to three quarters of an inch, which means there will be relatively heavy rain for at least a couple of hours, per the National Weather Service. The following day, January 1, will likely experience light rain in the afternoon and overcast skies.

Last year was the first time we saw a New Year's Eve celebration that approached the volume of pre-pandemic festivities. That was slightly dampened by lighter showers and cold weather, which dipped to 36 degrees—several degrees colder than the expected low of 46 tomorrow night.

If you are planning to be outside, whether at one of the many rooftop parties across the city or at the Times Square Ball Drop, there are some steps you can take to mitigate your chances of getting sick. Make sure to wear waterproof gear, stay hydrated, move as much as possible and dry yourself off as soon as you get the chance, per the Mataki Medical Center. The rain itself won't make you sick, but a lower body temperature affects the immune system and makes you more susceptible to getting sick. So make sure to bring those immune boosters, if you have them. And of course, don't forget your umbrella.

Luckily, there are many parties and events that won't require stepping foot outside for much of the night. They include a New Year's celebration at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, a techno rave at SILO in Brooklyn that will go on till 4am, or one of the many New Year's Eve dinners being offered across town, with extended holiday hours and champagne toasts that will keep you indoors until after midnight.
