At the end of 2023, the city's cocktail-loving masses mourned the closure of Amor y Amargo, the popular East Village bitters bar by Overthrow Hospitality that had all but defined the downtown drinking scene since first debuting in 2011.
Fast-forward to today, when Amor y Amargo has not only reopened by reoccupied its original address at 443 East Sixth Street right by Avenue A.
What's more, as chronicled on Instagram, the space has undergone a pretty hefty renovation ahead of its reopening.
"Check out that new ceiling, it looks gorgeous," beverage director Sother Teague said on the social media platform while showing off some of the updates. "We are doing some painting, we refreshed the wallpaper. We had to pull all the shelves from the wall and lower them because the ceiling got lower. I can't wait to show you what we're doing in here."
What has not changed, though, according to Eater, is the stellar menu served at the destination. Expect classic cocktails to share menu space with bitters-based concoctions like the James Run Free, made with amargo, tremontis mirto, squash amaro, rye and bitters.
Fans of the watering hole have been wondering what will happen to the business' other space at 95 Avenue A, where the bar had moved to in 2020 before closing in December of 2023. Since then, the location had been used as Overthrow Hospitality's cocktail mixer shop (the business sells its bitters online!).
News about the reopening quickly spread on social media, with many users expressing their excitement on various platforms.
"I needed something to bring in some joy today and this announcement is it!!" someone wrote on Instagram.
"This has made my year already," another user noted.
"Damn I might actually break dry January for this," a third person funnily shared.
We are, of course, joining the chorus of elation. Welcome back, Amor y Amargo!
