The Dead Rabbit, voted one of the world's best bars by World's 50 Best Bars throughout the years, will be debuting a new concept on The Rooftop at Pier 17 in the Seaport District this Friday, January 10.
Dubbed Joxer's, the project will be a pop-up Irish sports bar boasting private dining cottages, bungalows and an ice skating rink.
The drinking den will span the entire rooftop space and operate through early March, after which the area will be transformed into the pub's St. Patrick's Day concept, called "Paddy's Not Patty's."
"As a passionate sports fan, I have long been looking to celebrate Ireland’s sporting culture in a way that welcomes everyone," said Jack McGarry, a managing partner at The Dead Rabbit, in an official statement before teasing yet another novel bar concept by his team. "Joxer’s will allow our team to flex its creative muscle while delivering on our signature brand of hospitality. And, it’s a great preview of what’s to come down the line with our own sports bar concept, McGarry’s—still in the ideation phase."
The pop-up's name also honors the various themes: it's a specific call out to singer Christy Moore's classic folk song "Joxer Goes to Stuttgart," about a group of Irish soccer fans who travel to Germany in support of their own country during the 1988 UEFA European Championship.
Once officially set up, Joxer's will feature a number of large screen TVs, neon sports signs, memorabilia from top organizations like the NHL, the NBA and the NFL and a drink menu packed with sports bar classics and more creative takes on the familiar, like the Bonus Points Boilermaker (a pint of Guinness served with as hot of Teeling small batch whiskey, cacao and Cassis) to the Joxer's Irish coffee (Tullamore D.E.W., hot coffee, salted caramel and whipped cream).
Food-wise, expect corned beef tacos, ham and cheese toasties and other cold-weather delicacies to pepper the menu.
As for programming, patrons will get to catch all major league games and events, even requesting specific channels when occupying the Cottages—which will feel like "a VIP box at a sporting event," according to an official press release—and the Bungalows. Not into actually watching games? Have some fun on the ice rink instead or opt for some arcade fun.
Just think of enjoying all of those offerings five stories above the East River, where the Rooftop at Pier 17 is. Sounds like a winter wonderland to us.
