Over the course of the year, the inspectors at Michelin visit countless restaurants, touring and tasting the finest of the world. Periodically adding to their guides, (you can read about the most recent update here), Michelin inspectors have recommended nearly 400 restaurants in New York alone. All of it laddered up to the 2024 Michelin Guide award ceremony. Held last night at The Glasshouse, the star-studded ceremony awarded chefs, sommeliers and hospitality veterans across New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
The beginning of the evening kicked off with special awards. Suwincha “ChaCha” Singsuwan from Bangkok Supper Club received the Exceptional Cocktails Award; the Sommelier Award went to Chase Sinzer and Ellis Srubas-Giammanco of Penny (one of our best new restaurants of 2024); Tina Vaughn of Eulalie received the exceptional service award; and the Young Chef Award was awarded to Joseph Rhee of Jean-Georges. A somber moment of the evening, The Mentor Chef Award was presented posthumously to James Kent. His wife and partner at Kent Hospitality Group, Kelly Kent, and his children accepted the award on his behalf.
On the sustainable front, New York’s One White Street received a Green Star for its farm-to-table philosophy and partnership with Rigor Hill Farm in the Hudson Valley. Additionally, the guide added 16 more restaurants to its Bib Gourmand list, including regional Cantonese restaurant by Calvin Eng, Bonnie's; another one of our best restaurants of 2024, chef Vikas Khanna's Bungalow; and Lungi, the south Indian and Sri-Lanka spot in the Upper East Side.
The biggest stunner of the evening was the announcement of Jungsik’s three Michelin Star status, making it the first Korean restaurant in the U.S. to receive the honor. The fine dining revue was noted for its “cooking that is highly original, impeccably executed, and enormously satisfying.” The restaurant joined the ranks of fellow three-star restaurants that kept their ranks: Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa and Per Se.
Three restaurants gained a two-star rating, including César for chef César Ramirez’s “world-class seafood”; Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare for its “a volley of delicate tarts and bites that showcase skill and refinement"; and Sushi Sho, noting chef Keiji Nakazawa’s “mastery of the highest order” when it comes to omakase.
Receiving a one-star status for the first time, eight restaurants made the cut. The new awardees include chef Jeff Miller’s omakase, Bar Miller; the new-and-improved Cafe Boulud; chef Fidel Caballero’s Mexican fine dining restaurant, Corima; Westchester’s modern farmhouse, La Bastide by Andrea Calstier; Joo Ok’s modern Korean tasting menu; Nōksu’s contemporary Korean cuisine found underneath 32nd St. & Broadway Subway Station; chef Cheng Lin’s omakase counter in Williamsburg, Shota Omakase; and Hell’s Kitchen Chinese tasting-menu spot, Yingtao.
All this to say, we have plenty more eating to do. Read the full list of awardees here.
