The weather gods have been cruel to us this fall. For seven consecutive weekends, it has rained in NYC, barring us all from truly enjoying the fall weather and all the fun outdoor events that were planned, from the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade to the Amazing Maize Maze at Queens County Farm.
We were so unlucky this month, with several storm systems pushing their way into the area, but this weekend is looking promising for sun and warmth!
RECOMMENDED: The best Halloween events for 2023 in NYC
According to the National Weather Service, NYC will see a high of 76 degrees on Friday with partly sunny skies. Saturday will be mostly sunny at 77 degrees and Sunday will have just a 30% chance of rain, partly sunny with a high near 69 degrees. Not exactly fall weather (that would be too obvious of Mother Nature), but we’ll take warm, sunny skies over the rain!
So now that we know the weather will cooperate, here five ways to really take advantage of the beautiful (and dry) last weekend of October.
1. Hit up the Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest
Cheer for all the cute doggos in their Halloween finery during this year's 25th Annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest on Saturday, October 28. Held every year by Fort Green Park Users and Pets Society since 1998, the event is held at the bottom of the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument stairs, where more than a hundred dogs run around in silly and creative costumes from RBG to hot dogs and more.
2. Catch a Rooftop Cinema Club Halloween movie
Rooftop Cinema Club is screening rooftop movies this fall with a packed slate of films running all the way through October 31. Sip wine and eat vegan popcorn while watching classics like When Harry Met Sally, The Addams Family, Hocus Pocus and lots more this autumn.
3. Head to NYBG’s Fall-O-Ween
The event includes hundreds of pumpkins and gourds on display, hands-on activities like mini pumpkin decorating, 3D pumpkin carving, food and beverage talks, tastings and more. Two family-friendly Spooky Garden Nights (Saturday, October 21 and Saturday, October 28) will also offer Halloween-themed entertainment including dancing skeletons, decorating trick-or-treat bags, live shadow puppets, plant potting ad more.
4. Sink your feet into the sand one last time
You technically don’t need to leave Manhattan to go to the beach. Gansevoort Peninsula, a 5.5-acre park, is now home to the first-ever public beachfront in Manhattan. Check it out now before temperatures drop drastically!
5. Go to the last Queens Night Market of the season
Don’t miss the Queens Night Market’s Halloween-themed season finale on Saturday! It’ll have live entertainment, trick-or-treating and costume contests with prizes (the kids’ costume contest will start at 7:30pm and the adults’ contest will follow at around 8:30pm). Donated prizes for the costume contests include a Jeff McNeil-signed baseball from the NY Mets; exclusive VIP-suite concert tickets from Forest Hills Stadium; gift certificates to iconic toy store Kidding Around; roundtrip flights from Delta Air Lines; three $100 gift certifications from Queens Center Mall; two $100 restaurant vouchers from Resorts World, and an Eli Manning-signed football courtesy of Citizens.
