If you've ever experienced a night out in New York, then you know there's nothing quite like it: Whether you've spent it raving inside a converted hangar in Brooklyn till 4am or chatting it up in a late night empanada shop, the city truly has something for everyone.

That's why it comes as no surprise that a new ranking just placed New York at the very top of its list of the best party cities in the country.

The ranking, which was compiled through research by MattressNextDay, identified the best 24-hour city by taking into account factors like the number of late night events, dance clubs, party search volume on Google, the availability of public transit and the quality of facilities such as hotels and restaurants.

The ranking found that there were an average of 610 nighttime events on any given night across the city, which is higher than any other city they analyzed. They also looked at the quality of sleep you can get after a long night out in New York: "More than half of its hotels are rated four stars or higher on TripAdvisor, ensuring you can sleep in luxury after a long night taking in all the sights of the Big Apple," wrote Martin Seeley, the report's author.

After New York came Las Vegas, with a whopping average of 106,200 nightlife events, but which ranked lower than New York in the categories of safety, available dance clubs, and percentage of 4-star hotels. Other cities that came out on top included Boston, Austin and San Diego.

We definitely believe New York's top spot is well deserved: For one, our parties stay open later than in almost any other part of the country. Most nightclubs here don't close until 4am (or much later if you know where the afters are), compared to other parts of the country where bars and clubs close at 2am or earlier. On top of that, our transit system—albeit flawed—functions 24/7, eliminating the logistical nightmare of trying to get home after a few drinks.

New York nightlife has its challenges of course: there are so many options that sometimes it's hard to know where to look, or which parties are actually worth going. To stay up to date on the best parties across the city each month, including the latest bar and club openings, make sure to keep an eye on Time Out’s nightlife page and follow my nightlife column, “Out Late.”
