NYC has had exceptional fall weather all week—here’s what that means for this weekend’s Halloween forecast

Dry skies should keep Halloween plans intact, but cooler temperatures call for an extra layer beneath your costume.

New York has spent the week making a persuasive case for taking the long way home. Sunshine, comfortable afternoons and very little reason to dig out the serious winter coat: October has been behaving itself—but now comes the real test: will the weather cooperate with a city full of people in Halloween costumes?

The answer is mostly yes. Halloween looks dry and sunny, though Saturday will bring a noticeable cooldown after Friday’s near-70-degree warmth. Your costume’s structural integrity will hold up, but your bare legs may object.

According to News 12’s forecast, we're in our driest stretch of the year, with rain staying away for the next several days. Today's combo of abundant sunshine and 70-degree temperatures is hard to complain about, although northwest winds could gust to 30 mph later in the day.

On October 31, Halloween, the warmth gives way to something more recognizably autumnal. Morning temperatures will hit the lower 50s, with many neighborhoods spending much of the afternoon in the upper 50s despite the sunshine. (The overnight low is 46—chilly, but certainly not frigid.) The encouraging part has held up: rain is still largely absent from the Halloween plans. Trick-or-treaters and parade watchers, however, should consider layers in advance.

Sunday offers another dry day, but an early start will feel decidedly colder. Expect morning lows near 40 degrees throughout the five boroughs, with temperatures staying in the 40s through mid-morning before reaching around 60 in the afternoon. Anyone heading out early to cheer on NYC Marathon runners should dress for the wait, rather than the afternoon high.

The pleasant stretch may continue into next week, with some highs close to 70 and the next meaningful rain chance Thursday evening.

For Halloween, though, the forecast is reassuringly straightforward: keep the costume, but add a layer.
