Here in New York, we take great pride in our tap water—it’s the secret behind our famously delicious bagels, the city’s unofficial official food. And now, we’ve got the data to prove what we’ve always known: NYC has the best tap water in the world.

Medical travel insurance experts at AllClear analyzed nearly 2,000 Reddit posts to identify the destinations around the world with the best-tasting tap water—and, unsurprisingly, NYC topped the ranking for North America.

"The most mentioned location across all threads analyzed is New York City, where locals feel very strongly that their water—sourced from the Catskills—is the best in the world," the study states. "Many claim it contributes to the city’s iconic and delicious pizza and bagels, while travelers to the Big Apple often report being pleasantly surprised by how nice it tastes."

Other states also received praise, including Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Oregon and Washington.

In Colorado, for example, residents praised water sourced from the Rocky Mountains. Michiganders favor the water flowing from Lake Michigan and, surprisingly, Baton Rouge also earned recognition for its great-tasting tap water.

The research extended to Canada as well, where British Columbia claimed the top spot for the best tap water.

"While Calgary, Toronto and Quebec all received mentions, it’s Vancouver in B.C. that takes the crown," the study notes, with users calling it "incredible" and "some of the best" they've ever tasted.

Looking beyond North America, AllClear's analysis ranked Scotland as the top spot in Europe—not only the most mentioned location on the continent but the second most in the world. Elsewhere, Melbourne and Christchurch were recognized for their high-quality tap water, as were Yorkshire (described as “crispy” by one Redditor), Armenia, Aruba, Japan, Nepal and the Netherlands.

Whether it's the crisp mountain sources of Colorado, the fresh flows of British Columbia or the mineral-rich waters of Scotland, quality drinking water is something people appreciate—and remember. As for New York? We’ll keep enjoying the best tap water in the world, one bagel at a time.
