Hummus milkshakes are now available in NYC, and they're actually really good

Hummus and milkshakes are two things that usually shouldn't go together. One you order at a Mediterranean restaurant and spread on your 4am street meat, and the other is a liquid dessert. So when we first found out about the "hummus shakes," were skeptical. After all, we've been experiencing food-fusion fatigue ever since we got up at 6am to wait for the cronut. But the team at Hummus & Pita Co. has created a mash-up that's not just healthy-good, but actually good good.

The vegan and gluten-free shakes live somewhere between a protein shake served at a bougie juice bar, and an actual, candy-flossed milkshake served at a greasy spoon diner. The all-natural formula is made with just chickpeas, tahini, banana, dates and almond milk, which means it has a lot of protein, fiber and vitamins. (At least, more than the behemoths at Black Tap.) The result is a creamy, subtly-sweet shake that doesn't taste like you just swallowed a whole bowl of funfetti cake batter.

Right now, there are five flavors: original, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, and butter pecan. And while all were easy and pleasant to drink (pistachio and strawberry worked better than chocolate), I preferred the original, and took it back to my desk to sip for the rest of the day.

The shakes priced at just $5 for each 12oz cup, you're saving more than just calories. The shakes are available at all the Hummus & Pita Co. locations in the city, including Midtown West, Flatiron District and Tribeca.
