Just like your ConEd bill, bar tab and rent, a ride on the subway is increasing in price. ICYMI, August 20 marks the first day of the MTA's latest fare increase, the first in eight years.
Starting this Sunday, the cost of a trip on the subway will rise from its current $2.75 to $2.90 per ride, a 5% increase in price. That 15 cents will add up, but there's an easy way to save when the elevated fares hit.

Cash App is introducing a new special offer to help New Yorkers save some coin. Cash App's new MTA Boost will save you $1 per subway ride, once every 6 hours, meaning your trips will be reduced to $1.90 per ride.
Here's how it works. First, you'll need a Cash App Card, a free Visa debit card that connects to your Cash App balance. Once you have your card, just activate the Boost feature via the app and voila: instant savings on every subway ride you take (as long as the trips are paid for six hours apart). The offer works up to four times per day.
Everyone in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island NY-NJ-CT-PA MSA will have the Boost automatically added on their Cash App cards, as long as your Boost feature is enabled. Just tap, pass through the turnstile, and forget about the fare increase (for now).
Just like the to-be-discontinued Metrocard machines, the Boost may not last forever, but taking advantage of the savings while you can is probably worth it.
