With Easter approaching this weekend and all of NYC’s flowers in bloom, bright colors are everywhere you look.
Apparently, this week, there will be a Pink Moon to accompany all the pastels.
Below, we consulted The Old Farmer’s Almanac to explain the Pink Moon and how you can view it.
What is a Pink Moon and why’s it called that?
The Pink Moon is just April’s full moon—the first full moon of spring—and isn’t actually pink. It’s called the Pink Moon because April’s full moon corresponds with springtime blooms, particularly of the Phlox subulata, a wildflower native to eastern North America that has gone by the name “moss pink.”
It will likely appear yellow or even orange because of the angle of light hitting the moon and the Earth’s atmosphere.
When can I see the Pink Moon in NYC?
The Pink Moon will hit peak illumination at 12:34am EST on Thursday, April 6. But cloud cover, which is predicted, may obscure any views. If you want to try to see it, head out late Wednesday night.
When is the next pink moon?
The next Pink Moon is Thursday, April 6, at 12:34am, but it won’t happen again until April 23, 2024 7:49pm EST.
Happy viewing!
