Right before the weekend, Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez and Lyft announced a pretty massive expansion to the Citi Bike program across the city.
Set to kick off in the fall of 2025, the updates will make the service accessible in new neighborhoods across Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, where novel bike fleets will be installed.
Officials report that, once the updates are in place, around 64% of New Yorkers will have access to a Citi Bike within a five-minute walk. That's huge.
According to Citi Bike data, the service, owned by Lyft, was used for over 5.1 million rides this past October, a 143% increase compared to the same month in 2019. Clearly, riders are indirectly requesting an expansion of the service.
"Citi Bike is more popular than ever because it’s convenient, sustainable, and a quick way to get around," said Rodriguez in an official statement. "Bike share has become an integral part of our transportation landscape, and this expansion will bring this great service to even more communities."
Where is Citi Bike expanding to in NYC?
According to an official press release, starting this upcoming fall, Citi Bike service will expand into new parts of Brooklyn—Bay Ridge, Brownsville, East New York and Kensington. It will also take over northern portions of the Bronx—Riverdale and Norwood, to be precise—and the west side of Flushing Meadows in Queens.

How many Citi Bike stations are in NYC?
According to Citi Bike, the company now operates over 1,700 stations and 27,000 bikes across Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Jersey City and Hoboken.
Believe it or not, a whole bunch of New Yorkers often set out on quests to visit all of the bike kiosks across the city, whether to embark on the best bike routes in NYC or just be able to tell fellow citizens that they have accomplished the task. They'll now have a bunch of more stations to travel to!
