Now through the end of the year, lucky Metro-North commuters may find themselves riding the system's brand-new festive holiday train, blinged out in lights, cheerful decor and themed safety messages.
“I’m thrilled that Metro-North can bring the joy, beauty, and lights of the season to all of our riders on their way to work, school, or to see family and friends during the holidays,” said Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi in an official statement.
Although the nicely decorated electric train operates on three routes—Hudson Line, Harlem Line and New Haven Line—it does so on a random rotation of regularly scheduled trains throughout the day and night, so you'll have to simply hope to eventually board one on your commute.
“We wanted to create something special for our community and bring back the sense of wonder, especially for children, and for children of all ages,” said Metro-North Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Justin Vonashek in an official statement. “It’s a way for us to connect with our passengers and create lasting memories during this festive time of year when days are short and darkness is long. We hope these colorful lights spark excitement and a sense of holiday cheer for all who come aboard and who see the train pass by.”
Not a Metro-North rider? Worry not! The New York Transit Museum has brought back its beloved holiday nostalgia rides this month, which might not feel as festive as the holiday lights trains but are certainly as evocative of the holiday spirit.
