Another day, another sad culinary closure: West Side Rag reports that Silver Moon Bakery, the beloved Upper West Side spot at 2740 Broadway near 105th Street, will permanently close its storefront after over two decades of business on March 23.
Long-time owner Judith Norell wrote an email to the publication announcing the news last night.
"After 24 years, the owners, Judith Norell and Georgia Stamoulis, have decided not to fight the landlord’s refusal to extend the business’s lease," reads the note, co-written by co-owner Georgia Stamoulis. "It is a sad day for Silver Moon and for the neighborhood, which welcomed the bakery’s opening on November 8, 2000. Silver Moon Bakery became a gathering place, particularly notable on September 11, 2001, when customers crowded into the tiny space, comforted by the smell of baking bread. People had found a safe place in which to feel community. Silver Moon will always be grateful for its 24 years of community support in its effort to create and sustain the highest standards of artisanal breads, pastries and cakes in a warm and friendly environment."
We can't say we're surprised by the news—just two months ago, reports of a possible eviction notice circulated online. According to a lawsuit, the bakery's landlord, Broadside Realty, sued the business, alleging it overstayed its lease agreement and owed more than $200,000 in rent.
While Silver Moon Bakery's owners never commented on the specifics and the litigation remains ongoing, it's hard to imagine that the dispute didn’t influence their decision to close.
For now, the best way to show support is to visit in the coming weeks before the doors shut for good. Stock up on challah and cookies while you still can—you’ll be missing them soon.
