The YJs have always been a hard quartet to dismiss, even if smoothed-out improvs aren’t your idea of great jazz; one minute, they’re chewing on something innocuous, and the next, saxist Bob Mintzer or keyboardist Russell Ferrante reminds you that the members came up playing bop. With over 30 years behind them, the group is celebrating 23 albums.
