Rollins turns 80 a few days before he hits the Beacon, and it’s worth noting that among the accolades and bons mots thrown his way after six decades in the biz, his vigor has never been questioned. He’s still jazz’s most formidable melodic deconstructionist, able to find reservoirs of emotion in great tunes, as well as obscurities that seem like throwaways until Rollins’s gifts reveal what we all missed. As is his wont when he moves into a New York concert hall, Rollins is bringing an entourage for this celebration: Trumpeter Roy Hargrove, guitarist Jim Hall (a veteran of Rollins’s storied “bridge” period) and bassist Christian McBride are the announced guests, but he’s promised several others.
