Greg Cartwright, at 41 already an elder statesman of garage punk, brings his soul-inspired Reigning Sound to town. Whereas the musician's old Oblivians were a punk band foremost, Reigning Sound acts as a more flexible vehicle for his songs, with impassioned burners set alongside tunes that favor more deliberate R&B and early-rock rhythms, complemented by the B3 of keyboardist Dave Amels. The sound draws from the well of Memphis-born soul pioneered by Stax Records and other institutions.
