Rangda + Major Stars

Rangda unites Chris Corsano, a talented drummer of avant-garde proclivities, with Six Organs of Admittance’s Ben Chasny and Sun City Girls’ Richard Bishop, both guitarists of different generations who approach their instrument as a potential conduit to transcendental awareness. False Flag (Drag City), the trio’s debut LP from earlier this year, divides its six instrumental tracks into two distinct styles: cacophonous blasts of seemingly improvised noise—defenseless eardrums, meet your maker!—and songs that appear more composed, in both form and spirit. Major Stars are a long-running Boston outfit that pairs post-Hendrix acid-rock excess with punk fury—staunchly over-the-top, yet undeniably rousing.
