In the rush and crush of this week's Northside Festival, we're super excited about this rare, intimate show from New York treasure Nina Nastasia, whose fans include Steve Albini and the late British music icon John Peel. Since her 2000 debut, Dogs, Nastasia has delivered a series of subtle, dark, beautiful records, the latest of which is Outlaster. In tone, her music resembles Will Oldham's work; but Nastasia has a bell-clear voice and an economical way with phrasing that's all her own. At tonight's show, she'll play new material alongside fan favorites in the company of composer and pianist Daniel Knox—a singer-songwriter with a melancholic croon who, in the tradition of Randy Newman, performs refreshingly mean-spirited songs from the piano. Wonderful.
