Pianist Matthew Shipp persists as a resilient outsider, maintaining strong ties to NYC’s free-jazz community even as he assails its orthodoxies. Here he teams with veteran Roscoe Mitchell, a founding father of the genre, whose performances can match any noise artist or metal band on the planet for sheer perverse abrasiveness. Though the two's collaborative improvisations could go any number of ways, from forebodingly abstract to near-cartoonish, you can expect nothing but mastery regardless of the direction.
