Mahler's penchant for burying old folk songs within the swells of dissonance in his symphonies led Sigmund Freud, after a one-on-one session, to include that the composer must be trying to resolve some childhood trauma. If that was the case, his second symphony must be his most cathartic of the nine he completed. It's probably the densest and certainly the longest. Zubin Mehta leads the Israel Symphony Orchestra in this monumental work.
