“If I could make this day last, you know I would,” David Hidalgo sings halfway through the new Los Lobos album, Tin Can Trust. As a matter of fact, making time stand still is one of this veteran roots-rock group’s strong suits: Nearly four decades into a career that’s taken them from the barrios of East Los Angeles to a gig this past year at the White House, Hidalgo and his bandmates sound no less juiced about exploring their music than they did during the outfit’s early days—or during the mid-'80s, when Los Lobos’ version of “La Bamba” (from the film of the same name) earned the band a No. 1 hit. The history has definitely piled up for these guys, but it’s never threatened their animating sense of adventure.
