John Doe, best known for fronting X and the Knitters, walks the line between punk and roots, playing an electric set tonight in support of his recently released solo-material compilation, The Best of John Doe: This Far. In support, Alex Battles serves a sly, catchy mix of old-fashioned country songs outfitted with newfangled lyrics (see "Drinkin' Alone with Conan"). John Doe's June 24 show at Hudson Square is part of City Winery's free afterwork series.
