The fact that young Brit guitarist James Blackshaw lists his influences on MySpace in alphabetical order suggests a supremely organized mind, not to mention excellent taste in music (Albert Ayler, Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, etc.)—and you can hear both these elements on current disc The Glass Bead Game, Blackshaw’s lovely debut for Michael Gira’s Young God label (a new album, All is Falling, is due any second). Live, just let the tumble of guitar arpeggios wash over you until your brain is pleasantly pummeled into a state of distinctly unmathematical bliss.
