You can tell from the members' collective résumé—which includes work with Lou Reed, Henry Threadgill and the Rollins Band—that Harriet Tubman is a special kind of power trio. Few things in downtown music are as ravishing as Brandon Ross's fluid guitar in full cry, and bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer J.T. Lewis make for a mighty rhythm section. Here the group teams up with equally commanding, versatile vocalist Cassandra Wilson in a new collaborative venture.
