Trumpeter Eddie Henderson has had a long and varied career, gigging with Herbie Hancock's famed Mwandishi band in the early ’70s, and leading his own funk-oriented outfit later in the decade. Now that the fusion era is long behind him, he consistently turns out the hippest postbop around. Expect more of the same here, as Henderson plays from Collective Portrait, his luminous latest disc on Smoke Sessions (the club's in-house label). The stellar backing band features saxist Gary Bartz, pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Billy Drummond.
