Chicago Underground Duo started in the late ’90s as the improvised team-up of multi-instrumentalists Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor, but the pair has expanded ever outward—or inward, as it were. As you can hear on its new Northern Spy release, Locus, the Duo now operates as a sort of ecstatic sound factory—sometimes sparse and abstract, sometimes tight and tuneful, but always bubbling over with the spirit of invention and collaboration. Here, Mazurek and Taylor play a rare local gig in support of the LP.
