Riccardo Muti and his Windy City players come back to town for a three-night Carnegie residency. Though it's slightly disappointing to see that they won't be playing any of the compelling works by Anna Clyne that the orchestra has commissioned in recent seasons, the programs are strong. On Jan 30, a Mendelssohn overture and Debussy's La mer share a bill with Scriabin's Symphony No. 3. On Jan 31, Chicago contributes to the recent boomlet of interest in Schumann's symphonies, with the composer's No. 3, along with a performance of Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2 (in which Yefim Bronfman is the soloist). The finale on Feb 1 brings Prokofiev's cantata Alexander Nevsky and Scriabin's Symphony No. 1.
