Big Star split in 1974, just after its depressing masterpiece, Third/Sister Lovers, was recorded but before its belated release; two of the album’s principal creators, frontman Alex Chilton and producer Jim Dickinson, have died in recent years. Yet the most crucial element behind a cult album is not its maker, but rather its cult. Here, an array of true believers gather to perform the LP, replete with strings. Performers include Big Star survivor Jody Stephens plus Mike Mills, Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Marshall Crenshaw, Pete Yorn and Reeve Carney.
