Situated in a landmark brownstone blocks from the Chelsea gallery district, Chelsea Lodge is a long way from any arcadian idylls. Yet the rustic name is reflected in the mishmash of Americana that adorns the pine paneling of the inn’s public spaces, such as rough-hewn duck decoys, cut-out roosters and early 20th-century photos. While all of the mostly tiny rooms come with TVs, showers and seasonal air-conditioning, most share toilets, so it’s not for everyone. Still, the low prices and undeniable charm mean that it can fill up quickly. For more privacy, book one of the four suites (from $229) down the block at 334 West 20th Street: All are former studio apartments with kitchenettes, and those at the back have direct access to a private courtyard.
