Prospect Heights home-brew store Bitter & Esters hosts the first-ever New York installation of Ales for ALS—a national ALS research fundraiser held by Loftus Ranches and Hop Union—, welcoming home-brewers from Brooklyn's the Brewminaries to create nine different beers that incorporate an experimental new hop called HBC 348. (The hop, which boasts notes of stone fruit, tropical fruit and orange, is donated at no charge to the brewers, allowing all ticket proceeds to go directly to the cause.) After you sample pours of the various styles, including a Belgian IPA and an English Brown Ale, you can put in your two cents by submitting a taste evaluation for each brew.
