Samurai Rebellion

“It can’t be helped,” goes the pitiable refrain in Kobayashi’s densely plotted samurai movie, impressively intellectual (barely a sword is flicked until the final 20 minutes) but also refreshingly feminist: The fate of a woman is at stake and, though she’s fought over like a piece of property, she definitely gets her say in the matter.
