Time Out says

Bardem’s story of two upper-class folks who kill a poor man on a bike and then keep silent about the deed (they’re having an affair, see?) is a hallmark of modern Spanish cinema; its subject matter and critique of the class system pissed off Franco, but it also paved the way for everybody from Bigas Luna to Pedro Almodóvar.
