Could it really have been a full decade since the Freedom party began spreading the funk gospel to NYC’s Friday-night revelers? Apparently, yes—as part of the SummerStage series, the crew is celebrating its tenth anniversary in Central Park on Tuesday, July 2, with none other than Cameo (of “Word Up” and “Candy” fame) performing live. What’s the shindig’s secret of longevity? It’s the mix that residents Marc Smooth, Cosi and Herbert Holler dole out, of course—an unpretentious and totally fun mélange of hip-hop, R&B, boogie, new-jack swing, house, disco and the like, designed to get bodies on the dance floor. And here’s taste of that tuneage: It’s the Freedom Dance Party Volume 2 mix, compiled with love by Mr. Holler. Give it a listen, and then party down with the gang in person on Tuesday.
The Freedom Party Tenth Anniversary + Cameo is at Central Park's Rumsey Playfield Tuesday, July 2.
