Basic NYC
Six years and innumerable superstar spinners later—the likes of Derrick Carter and Frankie Knuckles regularly stop by—Sleepy & Boo's Basic NYC bash, held on Saturdays at Sullivan Room, is still one of NYC's premier parties for high-grade dance music. But the secret to the night's success is its low-key, totally unpretentious vibe; it's more like a gathering of old (and new) pals than the typical, every-man-for-himself club night. Basic NYC at Sullivan Room 218 Sullivan St between Bleecker and W 3rd Sts (212-252-2151, basicnyc.com). Sat 9pm; $20--$25.
Deep Space at Cielo
Dance-music deity Franois K has been a huge influence on the scene since the disco days. Here, he spins his exquisite sets of underground rhythms each and every Monday night for one of the city's most intimate dance floors. Cielo, 18 Little W 12th St between Ninth Ave and Washington St (212-645-5700, cieloclub.com). Mon 10pm; $12.
The Bunker
If techno is now one of the biggest sounds in New York nightlife (and it is), you have Bryan Kasenic aka DJ Spinoza to thank. He kicked off the Bunker back in 2003, a time when serious techno was nearly nonexistent in Gotham. From there, he helped birth a new electronic-music scene with sheer perseverance—and extremely good taste in guest DJs and performers. Public Assembly, 70 North 6th St between Kent and Wythe Aves, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-384-4585, beyondbooking.com). Occasional Fridays, 10pm; $10--$20. Next event Fri 5.
Libation
Clubland was once the realm of society's outsiders, where after-dark freaks of all manner could feel at home. Now, of course, elitism rules—but not at shindigs like Libation, where soulful-house lovers of every race, every nationality, every sexuality—every everything, really—can get down as one. Sullivan Room, 218 Sullivan St between Bleecker and W 3rd Sts (212-252-2151, sullivanroom.com). Every second and fourth Thu, 10:30pm; $15, before 11pm $10. Next event Nov 11.
