If a new-classical composition "composed to be played out of doors" sounds like a gimmick, then take heart from the fact that John Luther Adams can make such conceits take wing and really fly. (His prior outdoor piece, Inuksuit, is also available as a home recording, if you'd like to get a sense of the way he conjures an open environment through his spatial sound aesthetic.) For this world premiere—a copresentation of Mosly Mozart Festival and Lincoln Center Out of Doors—members of starry contemporary groups such as the JACK Quartet, eighth blackbird, and TILT Brass convene under the musical direction of Doug Perkins.
